Certified Flagger

Position Summary:

The Certified Flagger is responsible for directing vehicles around the construction sites. You will also be responsible for placing barricades, signboards, and traffic cones. In addition to this, you should be recording the license number of those vehicles who disobey rules.

Primary Position Duties:

  • Maintaining the flow of traffic around the construction sites.
  • Flagging motorists to warn of obstacles or repair work ahead.
  • Closing the lanes in case of emergency and maintenance work.
  • Directing the vehicles as and when required.
  • Setting up traffic cones, and signs around the site.
  • Answering questions about detours.
  • Contacting team members about the traffic concerns if any.
  • Removing the barricades, traffic cones, and sign boards after completion of work.
  • Maintaining records of vehicles who disobey traffic signs and signals.
  • Informing the Construction Workers regarding any traffic issues.
  • Communicating efficiently with the other Flaggers via handheld devices.
  • Driving trucks to transport crews and equipment to work sites.
  • Performing roadside landscaping work, such as clearing weeds and brush, and planting and trimming trees.
  • Reporting to the Site Supervisor and Law Enforcement Officers.
  • Using hand signals and signs to direct the traffic.
  • Adhering to all the rules and regulations of the company.
  • Coordinate placement of proper signage and other traffic management devices.
  • Ensure that traffic control devices are moved as needed as crew locations move throughout the day.
  • Assist with flagging and other traffic management processes.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is kept equipped with necessary signage and other devices to support multiple crews.
  • Be able to learn VDOT and other entity requirements for traffic control device placement.
  • Adhere to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable.
  • Following all safety guidelines and wearing safety gear (like goggles, gloves, reflective vests, reflective leg gators and helmets).
  • Know, understand, and follow company policies.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Position Requirements:

While performing these duties, the employee will work primarily in an outdoor setting. There may be times that will require the employee to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to dust, fluctuating temperatures, and periodic high noise levels.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, and listen.

Education or Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A professional certification in the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) will be an advantage.
  • Work experience as a Flagger or a similar position in the Construction industry.
  • Ability to safely operate a company vehicle.
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language to communicate with employees, customers, suppliers, in person, on the phone, and by written communications in a clear, straightforward, and professional manner.
  • Ability to use the following hand tools: electric drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers.
  • Ability to walk over all types of terrain in all kinds of weather while carrying tools and equipment, including traffic control signage, cones etc.
  • Knowledge and training in traffic control techniques – flagger training and certification.
  • Understanding of all safety procedures, guidelines, and government laws and regulations.
  • The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust machines or vehicle controls to exact positions.
  • Near Vision and ability to see details at close range (within a few feet).
  • Depth Perception, the ability to judge objects closer or farther away from you.
  • Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work carefully and efficiently in potentially dangerous conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Physical strength and stamina are required to stand, walk, and lift for long periods of time.
  • Physical dexterity to work with tools, machines, and equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to read general system layouts from blueprints.
